Standards management in engineering, down to the drawing

In short

Standards management in engineering means knowing which company standards and external DIN, ISO and EN standards apply, which edition is valid and where they are used in parts, drawings and BOMs. We build it with you on CAD and PDM data. AI finds the references and lists the affected objects when a standard changes.

Updated 27 Oct 2026

When a standard is withdrawn or a company standard is revised, the first question is where it is used. References sit in drawing notes, title blocks, part properties, BOM lines and design guidelines, often written in several ways. The AI finds them and lists the affected parts and drawings for the engineer to check.

How it works

  1. 01

    List the standards in use

The application reads drawings, part properties, BOMs and design guidelines from the PDM and extracts every standard reference, including variant spellings such as “DIN912”, “DIN 912” and “ISO 4762”. The result is a register of the standards in use, with the edition where it is stated.

  2. 02

    Match with the valid editions

The register is matched with your company standards and with the status data of your standards service, for example an export from your standards management software. Withdrawn or replaced standards are flagged.

  3. 03

    Find the affected objects

When a standard changes, the application lists the parts, drawings, BOMs and guidelines that reference it, with revision and release state in Autodesk Vault or SolidWorks PDM. A typical case is drawings and BOMs that still call out DIN 912 socket head cap screws, a standard replaced by DIN EN ISO 4762 for coarse threads.

  4. 04

    Prepare the changes

The engineer decides what changes. Property and BOM updates for standard parts are prepared as a preview and applied once an engineer confirms them. Drawings change through your normal change process.

What you get

  • Register of standards in use

Which DIN, ISO, EN and company standards appear in which parts, drawings and guidelines, with edition.

  • Impact list per change

All objects that reference a changed standard, with revision and release state.

  • Uniform standard references

Proposals to write standard references the same way in properties, title blocks and BOMs, applied after confirmation.

  • Company standards kept current

A hint when a company standard still refers to a withdrawn or replaced external standard.

Limits

The application finds references that are written down. A standard that is applied without being cited in a drawing, property or guideline stays invisible. Scanned legacy drawings need text recognition first, and references inside images are found less reliably. Whether a new edition changes a part is a technical decision for the engineer. Purchased DIN, ISO and EN standards are protected by copyright, and using their text in an AI system needs a licence that allows it. DIN Media, formerly Beuth Verlag, offers network and AI licences for standards. Without such a licence, the work stays at standard numbers, titles and editions.

Frequently asked questions

What is standards management in engineering?

Standards management in engineering covers selecting, providing and monitoring the standards a company designs to: external DIN, ISO and EN standards, customer specifications and company standards. It tracks the valid edition of each standard and shows where a change affects parts, drawings and processes. Standards management software from the publishers handles purchasing and edition tracking, and the link to parts and drawings in CAD and PDM is a separate step.

How can drawings that cite a withdrawn standard be found in SolidWorks PDM or Autodesk Vault?

The built-in search reliably finds a standard number that is stored in a property or data card variable and written the same way everywhere. References in drawing notes, title blocks or BOM tables, and spellings such as “DIN912” or “ISO-4762”, need an extraction across the files. An application reads them through the CAD and PDM APIs and lists every drawing with revision and release state.

Company standard or DIN standard: what is the difference?

A DIN standard is drawn up by consensus in DIN committees and is open to anyone. Applying it is voluntary unless a contract or a law refers to it. A company standard is set by one company, often as a selection or restriction of external standards, for example a preferred range of screws or fits, and is binding inside that company. It should state which edition of an external standard it refers to.

May DIN and ISO standards be used in an AI system?

Only within the licence terms. Standards are protected by copyright, and the licence for a purchased standard does not automatically cover use in an AI system. ISO excludes unlicensed use of its content for training or evaluating AI models, and DIN Media, formerly Beuth Verlag, offers separate AI licences for standards. Without such a licence, an application can still work with standard numbers, titles and editions as metadata.
