Autodesk Vault consulting

In short

Autodesk Vault consulting means setting up Vault so that it fits how a design team works: folders, categories, properties, numbering, lifecycles, permissions and jobs. We plan and configure Vault Basic or Vault Professional with you, extend it with Data Standard and the Vault API, and bring existing Inventor and AutoCAD data in.

Updated 27 Oct 2026

Vault is often installed quickly and then grows without rules, with free file names, empty properties and no release states. We review the current setup, agree a target data model with your design and IT teams and implement it step by step. Work is billed at day rates for tasks agreed with our project lead.

How it works

  1. 01

    Review

Vault edition and version, folders, categories, properties, numbering schemes, user groups and the state of existing Inventor and AutoCAD data.

  2. 02

    Target concept

Data model, mapping between Inventor iProperties and Vault properties, lifecycles and revision schemes, permissions and the right edition, Vault Basic or Vault Professional.

  3. 03

    Configuration and extensions

Setup in a test vault, Vault Data Standard dialogs for consistent properties and numbers, Job Processor jobs for neutral formats and Vault API extensions where the standard ends.

  4. 04

    Migration and rollout

Cleanup and import of existing files with intact references, tests with your designers, training and go-live.

What you get

  • Vault concept

A documented data model with properties, numbering, lifecycles and permissions, agreed with design and IT.

  • Configured Vault

Categories, properties, lifecycles and revision schemes, set up and tested before go-live.

  • Data Standard and jobs

Input dialogs for consistent file names and properties, and jobs that create PDF or STEP files on release.

  • Clean data in Vault

Inventor and AutoCAD files imported with intact references. An AI function can propose missing descriptions or categories as a list that an engineer confirms.

Limits

Lifecycles, revision schemes, items and BOMs, change orders and multi-site replication are Vault Professional functions, while Vault Basic manages files and versions on one server. Vault Workgroup is no longer sold. Files with broken references or inconsistent iProperties are cleaned before import, otherwise the problems move into Vault. Extensions need a test run on each new Vault release. An ERP link is a separate project.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Vault Basic and Vault Professional?

Vault Basic manages files with check-in, check-out, versions and search on a single server. Vault Professional adds lifecycle states with release, revision schemes, items and bills of materials, change orders, Active Directory login, multi-site replication and web and mobile access. Vault Workgroup is no longer sold. A design team that releases drawings formally usually needs Vault Professional.

What is Vault Data Standard used for?

Vault Data Standard is a configurable extension for Autodesk Vault, Inventor and AutoCAD that adds input dialogs for files and folders. It makes sure designers enter required properties, choose the right category and get file names from a numbering scheme when saving. Dialogs are defined in XAML and logic in PowerShell, so they can be adapted without compiling an add-in.

How are existing Inventor files moved into Autodesk Vault?

After a cleanup, usually with Autoloader, the Autodesk tool for the initial upload of design data. Before the import, references are resolved, duplicate file names found and iProperties corrected. Vault does not enforce unique file names by default, and Autodesk recommends setting this option before the first files are added. A test import shows problems before the real one, and large data sets are moved in stages.

Can Autodesk Vault be extended with custom functions?

Yes. The Vault API in the Vault SDK is a .NET interface for client extensions, custom commands, event handlers and custom jobs for the Job Processor. Vault Data Standard covers input dialogs, and the Job Processor runs tasks such as creating PDF files or updating properties. Extensions should be tested on each new Vault release, and the edition decides which functions are available to them.
